Beppe Ciardi, son of the more famous Guglielmo, was among the protagonists of Venetian painting in the early twentieth century, heir to a veduta tradition that he interpreted in a tonalist and impressionistic key. The three small panels, united in a single frame, document his usual practice of studies from life, executed en plein air over different years. The first panel depicts the Riva degli Schiavoni with figures along the shore and the open lagoon in the background; the second shows a view of the Grand Canal with palaces reflected in the water; the third depicts a twilight scene with a group of figures in the foreground and the city's silhouette dissolving into the lagoon mist. The brushwork is loose and constructive at the same time, with rapid touches of color that refer to the Venetian "macchia" tradition, while the luminous atmosphere — gray veils of sky, patches of light on walls and clothes — reveals the tonal sensibility that characterizes his mature production.
