Francesco Paglia; Brescia 1635 - Brescia 1714, Holy Family, oil on canvas  Translated
Description:
Description Francesco Paglia attr. Holy Family Oil on canvas 73x98 cm The scene depicts the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Christ Child, according to the traditional iconography of the Holy Family. The composition is intimate and contained, in perfect harmony with the spiritual and devotional style typical of Francesco Paglia. Mary is at the center of the scene, leaning towards the Child with a gaze full of sweetness and maternal love. Her face is idealized, serene, and composed, framed by a white veil that falls softly over her shoulders. The Christ Child is swaddled, asleep or just waking, resting on his mother's knees. His face is peaceful, and his body is painted with delicacy and naturalness. Saint Joseph, placed behind the Virgin and barely visible, observes the scene with discretion and reverence. His mature face and white beard clearly identify him. The composition is set within a painted oval, a recurring element in Francesco Paglia's work, which lends the painting a devotional and private tone, almost as if it were an object for domestic contemplation. The setting is simple, with a dark and undefined background, which highlights the figure of the saint within a painted oval, as if it were a framed portrait. This is a mature work, attributable to the late period of Francesco Paglia's (Brescia 1635-1714) artistic production, as evidenced by precise stylistic references to similar works of this type found in the city of Brescia: the cycle of tondi of Saints created at the end of the century for the Basilica of Madonna delle Grazie and a Saint Euphemia within the Diocesan Seminary. Many distinctive stylistic references to Paglia are present: for the Holy Family, the abundant descriptiveness of the drapery folds, another distinctive element of Paglia's production. Also common is the tendency towards a flattening of the background, with a clear intention to give importance to the subjects depicted, also through the skillful use of soft light and veiled color.
