Fantastic landscape with friars and figures  Translated
Description:
Alessandro Magnasco called il Lissandrino (Genoa 1667 - 1749) attributed Oil on canvas Dimensions: 92 x 120 cm Frame: 97 x 126 cm Very good condition See all details of the painting at: https://www.antichitaischia.it/it/prodotto/paesaggio-fantastico- This charming painting depicting a Fantastic Landscape presents all the pictorial and scenic characteristics of the famous Genoese artist Alessandro Magnasco, known as il Lissandrino due to his short stature. According to the typical tenets of his landscape painting, it is set in a forest with fairy-tale yet subtly dark and unsettling tones. Strange figures, described with unmistakable features, wander through the woods while two inevitable friars rest in the cool by the bank of a stream. Illuminated by a break in the light among the tree branches, a ruined castle can be seen on a cliff. The large canvas, while respecting all of Magnasco's pictorial prerogatives, expresses a less dramatic atmosphere than his usual works, with much more accentuated luminosity. This, along with considerable scenic effort, leads us to consider the painting as the result of a moment of inner peace in his restless spirit. The outcome is a work of excellent craftsmanship, particularly interesting and pleasing. Magnasco remains one of the most brilliant and talented masters of 18th-century Italian painting, and his most significant works are featured in all the most important international museums, including the Uffizi, the Louvre, the Prado, the Hermitage, and the Metropolitan. In the canvas presented here, the stylistic and chromatic analogies with one of his works exhibited in Tokyo at the National Museum of Japan are evident.
