Napoleon III secretaire with drop-down writing surface in rosewood and palisander – France, 19th century
Splendid Napoleon III secretaire of fine French craftsmanship from the second half of the 19th century, made with rosewood and palisander veneer, decorated with high-quality gilded and chased bronzes, and complete with a white marble top.
The piece features an elegant, curved and sinuous structure, with bombe sides and fronts, typical of the Louis XV style revisited in the Napoleonic III era.
The front is divided into seven drawers, three of which conceal a drop-down secretaire. This opens to reveal an interior in light wood (maple) with two small central drawers, an upper shelf, and a writing surface covered in red leather.
The gilded bronze applications—depicting winged cherub heads, stylized lilies, foliage, and rocaille decorations—adorn the corners, edges, and bases, lending the piece great refinement and balance.
The shaped white marble top elegantly completes the upper section.
