We present this vast and harmonious composition, where a characteristic river landscape serves as the stage for an exquisite scene of popular life, set in a small village, with the actual town in the distance.
The painting, which exhibits characteristics unequivocally linked to Flemish culture of the second half of the 17th century, shows iconographic and stylistic correspondences, particularly with the successful works of Théobald Michou (Tournai, 1676 – Antwerp, 1765). Having trained in the studio of the landscape painter Lucas Achtschellinck in Brussels, he soon achieved great recognition, receiving numerous commissions from the French court.
Clearly influenced by the humanistic landscapes of Jan Brueghel the Younger, whose student he also was, the painter enlivens them with numerous scenes of rural life, all immersed in a soft, golden atmosphere.
Apart from the figure of a duck hunter along the watercourse, the rest of the protagonists are confined to a pleasant domestic setting, enlivened by many figures busy with their varied daily activities: a mother and grandmother caring for a newborn, a young man watching the herd drink, old men playing and conversing at a table, another woman intent on cooking, with a dog seemingly watching her curiously.
