Workshop of Jacopo Palma il Giovane (Venice 1548 - Venice 1628) - Baptism of Christ.
64 x 49.5 cm.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
The composition depicts the Baptism of Christ according to the established iconographic tradition of late 16th-century Venetian painting. Christ is kneeling on the left, his semi-nude body wrapped in a white cloth, his head encircled by a golden halo; John the Baptist, on the right, holds in his right hand the reed with the scroll bearing the inscription Ecce Agnus Dei, while with his left he performs the ritual gesture of baptism. In the upper left, the dove of the Holy Spirit descends within a luminous opening in the clouds. The landscape background, with trees and a distant view of a city, harks back to the late-century Venetian tradition in the atmospheric rendering of the landscape. The earthy palette and the construction of the figures coherently recall the circle of Palma il Giovane, whose compositional schemes for lagoonal religious painting between the 16th and 17th centuries are reproduced in the painting.
