The painting depicts the biblical episode of Moses striking water from the rock (Exodus 17:1-7): the figure of the patriarch, draped in heavy brown and ochre drapery, dominates the scene from above with his staff extended towards the rock from which water flows to the right. Around him, an intricate crowd of figures collects water in amphorae and drinks. The compositional structure and figurative repertoire directly refer to the models developed by Carpioni for multi-figure subjects, of which this canvas is a good quality workshop derivation.
