Pair of gilded wooden Roman soldiers - Rome, 18th century  Translated
Description:
Wooden sculptures depicting a pair of full-length Roman soldiers Rome, 18th century Carved and gilded wood (walnut?) Maximum height (to the spear) 62 cm. - Maximum width: 28 cm. The full details of this work can be consulted directly from the following - LINK - A pair of wooden sculptures depicting two Roman centurions, prized for their austere elegance, enhanced by the full-length construction as well as the all-around finishing. The two sculptures are characterized by a stylistic model that allows us to attribute their work to a carver active in the first part of the 18th century. The figures, which are realistically described especially in the splendid rendering of the garments, with rhythmic draperies, meticulous detail, and dynamic posture, fit into the rich and successful production of Italian sculptures, particularly Roman, between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This is a pair depicting two Roman soldiers, dressed in classic armor complemented by a long cloak and a bell-shaped crested helmet, while holding two long spears, raised from a globe-shaped pedestal. The works may have originally been part of a more complex composition, perhaps even religious in nature, like the numerous centurions that adorned a Calvario or a Via Crucis. The good state of preservation finally allows for full appreciation of the carving quality. Signs of restoration are present on the spear, near the hand (the upper part is detachable). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The sculptures are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet.
