Workshop of Pietro Longhi (Venice 1702 - Venice 1785) - The Procurator's Meeting with His Wife.
71.5 x 55.5 cm.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
The work reproduces the composition by Pietro Longhi (Venice 1702 - Venice 1785) housed at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle.
Pietro Longhi was the leading interpreter of genre painting in eighteenth-century Venice, capable of capturing with keen irony the customs and rituals of the lagoon society of his time. His interior scenes, conversations, visits, and domestic encounters take place in bourgeois or aristocratic settings, populated by figures in elegant attire and placed within contexts of daily life.
The scene depicts a young lady in a voluminous white dress at the center of the composition, flanked by a gentleman in a richly embroidered suit who respectfully addresses her. On the table is a spinning wheel with a gilded base, a domestic tool recurring in Longhi's repertoire. On the right, an elderly figure and a child read a book together. Longhi's workshop replicated the master's compositions with variations to satisfy a widespread collecting demand in eighteenth-century Venice.
