Frederick Dielman (Hannover 1847 - Washington 1935) - Portrait of a woman.  Translated
Description:
Frederick Dielman (Hannover 1847 - Washington 1935) - Portrait of a woman. 57 x 45 cm. Oil on canvas, unframed. Artwork signed lower right: "Frederick Dielman". Frederick Dielman was a painter and illustrator of academic German training, active in the United States from the late 1870s, where he became a key figure in the New York art scene and a teacher at the Cooper Union. Known primarily for his portraits and figurative compositions, he also worked for a long time as an illustrator for widely distributed magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Scribner's Monthly. The portrait depicts a young woman in traditional dress, with a dark bodice adorned with silver frogs, a white shirt with wide sleeves, and a red bow at the chest; around her neck, she wears a necklace with a gold and turquoise enamel pendant, and in her ear, an ornament with a floral motif. The figure is inscribed within an illusionistic oval on a neutral background shaded with ochre and blue, a compositional solution recurring in late 19th-century bourgeois portraiture. The rendering of the face is accurate, with soft modeling and attention to the details of the clothing. Condition report: Lined canvas.
