We offer this pleasant Annunciation, to be attributed to the hand of a painter active in the Tuscan area, specifically Florentine School, in the first half of the 17th century; the style still bears the pictorial styles of the previous century, an extraordinarily happy artistic period that saw a succession of leading artistic personalities, making Florence one of the most central and influential centers for painting of the time.
The work, certainly commissioned as an object of private devotion, presents itself according to the most typical iconographic scheme, with the Archangel Gabriel with spread wings standing before the Blessed Virgin, portrayed with supernatural beauty, who imperiously delivers the supreme announcement. Suspended in flight above a cloud, with one hand he holds the white lilies, symbols of purity and chastity, while the other reaches out to indicate the dove emanating light, emblem of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a halo of intense brilliance and play of light.
Even the dove of the Holy Spirit, depicted entering Mary's room and directed towards the woman, is a symbol of Jesus' conception through the Spirit.
