Oil on canvas. The work is a replica of the one executed by Pierre Mignard and donated to Louis XIV, now preserved at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The dramatic scene is set just outside the walls of Jerusalem; a procession of people accompanies Jesus on his ascent to Calvary, which can be glimpsed in the background on the right, with the crosses of the two thieves already erected. Instead, Christ's Cross is carried by Simon of Cyrene, forced by the guards after Jesus' umpteenth fall, who is roughly urged to get up with a whip. In front of Christ walk the two thieves, tied and accompanied by some servants; on the left, the group of devout women accompanying and supporting Mary, overcome by grief. Contrasting with this group, on the right, is another group of women from the people, who watch with pious compassion, averting their children's eyes from the terrible spectacle. The background landscape is rugged and barren, under a sky that is becoming laden with dark, gloomy clouds. The work was restored and relined in the mid-20th century, and mounted on a new frame. It is presented in a period-style frame.
