Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Emilio Donnini, a Florentine artist, established himself as a plein air landscape painter and marked the transition from a purely Romantic interpretation to Macchiaioli realism. He loved to portray especially romantic seascapes, painting scenes from life, mostly on his beloved island of Elba. His works are rich in delicate color palettes and diffused luminosity that extends brilliantly from the sky to the underlying surfaces, often water. The figures animating the scene are described with rapid brushstrokes yet with orderly precision. This landscape view depicts a body of water in the countryside, crossed by the remains of an ancient bridge; washerwomen are busy at their work on the stony bank. The painting shows traces of restoration. It is presented in a gilded frame from the mid-20th century.
