Agostino Beltrano (attr.) - Martyrdom of Saint Giulia - Oil on canvas, 17th century  Translated
Dimensions: : cm,: cm,: cm
Description:
Author: Attributed to Agostino Beltrano (Naples, 1607 – 1656) Materials: Oil on canvas Important antique painting executed with the oil on canvas technique, depicting the sacred iconography of the Martyrdom of Saint Giulia. The work portrays the Saint tied to the cross, with her gaze turned towards the sky in an expression of ecstasy and suffering, typical of Baroque devotion. The composition is characterized by strong dynamism and a skillful use of chiaroscuro. Above, two winged putti emerge from the clouds carrying the crown of martyrdom and the palm, symbols of spiritual victory. The drapery of the robe, rendered in warm, earthy tones, highlights remarkable technical skill in the rendering of folds and volumes. The work is stylistically traceable to the Neapolitan school of the 17th century. The attribution to Agostino Beltrano is supported by formal characteristics and the softness of the pictorial sign, as indicated by the cited catalog documentation. The painter, active in the circle of Massimo Stanzione, here blends Caravaggesque naturalism with a more graceful classicism. The work is presented within a molded frame decorated with non-contemporary relief motifs, which enhances its decorative and historical importance. The painting dates back to the mid-17th century (1600s), the period of greatest flourishing of the Neapolitan Baroque. The state of conservation appears good in relation to the period; the painted surface shows the natural aging and a craquelure consistent with the period of execution. Canvas Measurements 123x87 cm. Based on the image, it depicts the martyrdom of a male figure fixed to a cross, not Saint Giulia.  Translated
