This interesting view of the Venetian Lagoon depicts the "Regata Storica", the most important and spectacular event among all the festivals and commemorations that take place in Venice.
Every year on the first Sunday of September, the city witnesses the parade of typical Venetian boats and a series of races between crews of rowers along the Grand Canal. The procession that precedes the challenges of the Regata Storica commemorates the reception held in 1489 for Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus.
The countless 16th-century boats, multicolored and with gondoliers in costume, transport the doge, the duchess, and all the highest officials of the Serenissima in a reenactment of the glorious past of the most powerful and influential maritime republic in the Mediterranean.
The first historical evidence of this event dates back to the mid-13th century and is linked to the Feast of the Maries, but it is probable that in a city always in symbiosis with the sea, the regatta had even older origins, dictated by the need to train crews in rowing. Its first depiction in a painted image was by Jacopo de Barbari in 1500. Since then, the regatta became one of the favorite themes of vedutist painters to represent Venice in a festive atmosphere.
The author of the painting describes the scene in a magnificently beautiful architectural setting, at its most spectacular moment, with the procession passing through the Bacino di San Marco, under the Doge's Palace.
