Pair of Bronze Horses Sculptures, Grand Tour, Early 1800s. The sculptures are of rearing horses, Italian in origin, made from bronze with a dark patina, resting on turned, tiered, and shaped gilded wooden bases. In excellent condition, these animal sculptures come from a private collection.
The measurements of the two figures are slightly different, the larger measuring 19.5 cm high x 14 cm wide x 6.5 cm deep. The bronze figures alone, base excluded, are 15 cm high.
The dynamic charm of these antique neoclassical horse sculptures is remarkable, the plasticity of the pose with the raised front legs masterfully reflecting the energetic vigor and temperament of these animals.
These sculptures may have been created as a memento of a trip or as an artistic souvenir. They are typical examples of classical art and the taste for antique sculptures that were popular among travelers during the Grand Tour. The sculptures may represent a warhorse and a racehorse, or simply two majestic steeds. They are works of art of great historical and artistic value, reflecting the interest in classical culture and the beauty of antiquity during the Grand Tour period.
