Lombardy, Late 17th - Early 18th Century
Still life
Oil on canvas, 74 x 120 cm
Frame 99 x 144 cm
The still life examined depicts a collection of flowers and fruits, arranged on an undefined stone surface, similar to the dark and uniform background that enhances and emphasizes the emergence of individual components.
The lumpy surface of the lemons, as well as the hollowed-out flesh of the watermelon, materially reflect the light, as do the soft skins of the peaches or the hard rind of the pomegranate.
The composition is comparable to contemporary 17th-century examples of the Lombard school, whose naturalistic influence is evident in the completely original descriptive autonomy compared to the rest of the Italian artistic landscape.
