The little one, who stares at us with a knowing but also intimidated smile, is tenderly clinging to his mother, using his left leg to support himself. He appears distracted by the presence of the observer, and his sudden twist activates the painting. The plastic, incisive, but formally harmonious and well-balanced style allows us to frame the painting in the most beautiful production of the Florentine Renaissance. Dwelling on the details, it is easy to trace the work back to the workshop of Andrea del Sarto (Florence 1486 - 1530), one of the most excellent exponents of this period, defined by Vasari as a painter "without errors", praising its formal perfection, the speed and security of execution.
