Important Monumental Imari Porcelain Vase - Meiji Period (19th Century)
Description of the Work:
Splendid and imposing "bottle" vase (also known as a long-necked flask) in fine Japanese Imari porcelain, dating back to the second half of the 19th century (Meiji Period). This example is distinguished by its exceptional height of 95 cm, a rare size that places it among the high representation pieces, historically intended for large residences or international exhibitions.
Decorative Features:
The decoration is executed with the classic Imari color palette: underglaze cobalt blue, iron red and abundant gold finishing over glaze. The surface is entirely historiated with extraordinary compositional complexity:
* Central Body: Presents large polygonal reserves (cartouches in the shape of lightning bolts) that enclose different naturalistic scenes. On one side stands a centuries-old pine (symbol of longevity) near a traditional fence; on the other, a lively scene with a Dragon and a Phoenix, mythological creatures that represent balance and imperial harmony.
* Neck and Shoulder: The long neck is finely decorated with floral motifs in spirals and mon (stylized emblems), ending in a superior border with alternating petals in blue and red, enriched with gold details.
* Background: The space between the main reserves is densely populated with karakusa motifs (climbing vines), peonies and chrysanthemums, which create a "horror vacui" effect typical of the best production destined for export to the West.
Conservation Status:
The vase is in excellent general condition, considering the era and the monumental dimensions. The enamel retains its original shine and the gilding is still well defined.
