Austria, circa 1770. Wonderful chest of drawers with hutch, in German Aufsatzkommode, a practical piece of furniture typical of Austrian culture, which served as a sideboard or serving cabinet. The glazed hutch with inlays featuring sculpted roses and acanthus leaves, typical of the period, rests on a fascinating chest of drawers inlaid with swags and geometric motifs, in clear neoclassical style. The piece is made of solid oak, with maple and stained maple wood inlays. The work, in practically intact condition with original hardware, is in its original patina with a shellac finish applied by hand using museum-standard techniques. In the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this type of furniture was generally intended for small castles, noble residences in the provinces where nobles would go to hunt.
