Emilio Magistretti (Milan 1851 – Milan 1936) was an Italian painter active between the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. His style, while maintaining a strong realistic base, was influenced by the techniques of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism that he learned during his stay in Paris. This fusion of traditional and modern elements made him capable of capturing the essence of his subjects with great realism and of capturing a deep introspection in his portraits. His effigies show great humanity combined with a vibrant and dynamic application of color. Our girl is represented bare-breasted while embracing a docile tiger cub. The enigmatic expression on her face suggests calm and self-confidence, which also emerge from the attributes of nudity and the dangerous feline. The work is signed in the lower left and is very reminiscent of the stylistic features of Parisian art of the period, so the model may have been portrayed during this period. The frame, in carved and cream-lacquered wood, is original and contemporary to the canvas.
