Antique painting depicting the Face of Christ as Salvator Mundi
Flemish painter, 16th/17th century
oil on copper (22 x 18 cm / framed 42 x 39 cm)
An intense image of the face of Christ as "Salvator Mundi", immortalized in a frontal pose, with a fixed gaze directed at the observer, the work of a Flemish master active between the 16th and 17th centuries.
The expression is solemn and conveys a clear protective, reassuring message, accentuated by the sense of hieratic nature of the face, sublimated by the author through the use of a forcibly static pose and a frontality that follows an almost geometric rigor.
It is the most iconic Christian representation, made popular by the great northern European masters from the 15th to the 16th century, such as Gerard David (https://allenartcollection.oberlin.edu/objects/15554/holy-face), Hans Memling, Gerard David or Dirk Bouts.
Private prayer was encouraged and small works like this were easily transportable and suitable for domestic use, to respond to a spiritual tendency that emphasized meditation and reflection on the humanity and passion of Christ.
Even with human features, the transcendental nature, inherited from the eastern tradition of icons, is evident, the hypnotic and mysterious gaze, highlighted by the powerful beam of light that strikes the features front on.
