Pair of flower still lifes, Margherita Caffi (Cremona 1647 – Milan 1710) workshop of  Translated
Description:
Margherita Caffi (Cremona 1647 – Milan 1710) workshop of  Pair of flower still lifes oil on oval canvas (41 x 33 cm - with antique frames 54 x 45 cm) Full details of the works (click HERE) This flower still life pendant is to be attributed to an exponent of the Lombard school of the second half of the seventeenth century and in particular to the workshop of Margherita Caffi (Cremona 1647 – Milan 1710). In this phase, which developed mainly in Milan from the end of the 17th century, the compositions were characterized by extreme executive freedom and by a departure from descriptive realism, to favor the scenographic and chromatic effect. The works are both articulated on a lush bouquet of flowers executed with pictorial skill and attention to detail, grouping a vast sampling of flowers such as roses, anemones, tulips, daffodils, characterized by a vibrant luminosity and highlighted by the dark background. The painting is distinguished by an extreme freedom of pictorial drafting, an interweaving of free and animated brushstrokes, typical of her pictorial style. The painter was born in Cremona in 1647, daughter of the painter of French origin Vincenzo Volò, active in Lombardy in the seventeenth century: this family workshop is called "dei Vicenzini" and imposed its style from the mid-seventeenth century until the first quarter of the eighteenth century, strongly influencing the taste of Milanese collecting for still life. She then took the stage name by marrying at a young age the Cremonese painter Ludovico Caffi, with whom she perhaps completed her training. She was also active in Tuscany, where she worked and lived around the 1680s under the Medici patronage, favored by Vittoria Della Rovere, wife of Ferdinando II. Renowned and requested throughout Europe, among her clients were also the archdukes of Tyrol and the kings of Spain. Towards the beginning of the eighteenth century she moved permanently to Milan, where she created a flourishing workshop, protagonist of the development of the Baroque still life in Lombardy, knowing how to renew the figurative repertoire to satisfy the taste of the late seventeenth-century Milanese collectors.
