The "Portrait of Girolamo Grimaldi as ambassador" by Anton von Maron (Vienna 1733 Rome 1808), created around 1761, is one of the most significant works of the Austrian artist, a leading exponent of 18th-century portraiture.
The artwork portrays Girolamo Grimaldi, a Genoese diplomat and politician, who in 1761, as extraordinary ambassador of the King of Spain, ratified the Family Pact, a treaty of alliance between Spain and France. This treaty became fundamental in the context of European politics, as it sanctioned opposition to Anglo-Prussian alliances, thus strengthening the power of the two Bourbon crowns.
