Large Venetian altarpiece transformed into a mirror - late 17th / early 18th century  Translated
Dimensions: : 212 cm,: 110 cm
Description:
Important carved wooden altarpiece of Venetian origin, datable to the late 17th and early 18th century, subsequently adapted into a mirror. The structure, of considerable size and with a strong visual impact, features an elegant arched design in the upper part, typical of altarpieces intended for side altars. The entire frame is richly carved with plant motifs and gilded with pure gold leaf, with careful and deep workmanship that gives movement and plasticity to the whole. The side of the frame retains the visible orange bole preparation, not covered by gilding, an element consistent with an original architectural location leaning against the wall or inserted into an altar, where the lateral parts were not intended to be seen. This technical detail reinforces the hypothesis of an ecclesiastical commission and a realization designed for a liturgical context. The mirror presents normal signs of aging, including slight abrasions and small structural settlements of the wood; the gilding in the lower part appears to be partially restored in a later period, probably due to wear and tear from use, without compromising the overall harmony of the work. An object of great charm and presence, ideal as a monumental mirror or a decorative architectural element, capable of enhancing representation spaces, galleries or historic residences.  Translated
