A student of G. A. Pellegrini, he soon turned to perspective decoration; an expert engraver, he translated views by Canaletto. A proponent of architectural classicism in Venice, he was among the founders of the Academy, where he taught perspective. He designed Palazzo Smith (1751, later Mangilli-Valmarana), one of the most beautiful overlooking the Grand Canal, and the facade of Palazzo Giusti (1766). Under the guidance of Gian Domenico Tiepolo, he collaborated on the frescoes of Villa Valmarana near Vicenza.
