Antique painting of a Franciscan saint in prayer with cherubs from the 17th century
Description:

COD 11480

Antique 17th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a religious subject, a Franciscan saint in prayer with cherubs, of excellent pictorial quality. The vertically arranged painting, beautifully proportioned and spacious, depicts the saint kneeling in the traditional robes of his order. The rosary and crucifix in the friar's hands are also present. Note the cherub holding a compass in the lower left. Compasses were used in ancient times to represent God, the perfect creator, but also to symbolize God's wisdom entrusted to the words of a saint.

Given the symbols present, the artwork appears to depict Saint Francis of Assisi, although the figure does not show signs of stigmata in his hands (see photo). Two cherubs in the upper left enhance the scene. The simple 20th-century wooden frame bears a plaque indicating an old attribution to Lazzaro Tavarone 1556-1641 (see photo).

This painting has undergone extensive conservative restoration work, with color restoration in several areas (see photo), relining, and replacement of the stretcher. The painting has a beautiful patina with a small drops of color on the left (see photo). Overall, the artwork is in fair condition. Internal dimensions: H 107.5 x W 84 cm.
