Exceptional "Madonna of the Rosary" in the presence of Saints Dominic and Rose of Viterbo attributable to the hand of the painter and master from Gaeta Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764), whose name is reported on the frame, probably as eighteenth-century inventory information, which, given the style and quality of the painting, we can judge reliable.
Conca executed numerous versions of the "Madonna of the Rosary" for Roman and Lazio ecclesiastical bodies, whose iconography was a great success during the first half of the 18th century, and it is therefore possible to make stylistic and qualitative comparisons with the other known "Madonnas of the Rosary", one to which we can certainly refer is the one in the Capodimonte collection in Naples and datable to 1732, and given the non-monumental measurements, also intended for private devotion. In this work we can see a similar use of chromatic material with light and bright tones, and also the same airy atmosphere due to the architectural setting of the background with monumental fluted columns, in which swirling turquoise drapes branch out.
The frame on which the painting is mounted deserves a separate discussion given its extraordinary quality and rarity, in fact it is a finely carved frame inlaid with painted glass tiles, this processing of remarkable craftsmanship and artistic are testified in the Roman environment at the end of the 17th century and executed by carvers belonging to the school of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The measures of the canvas are 50cm x 65cm; the external measures of the frame are 72cm x 88cm.
The painting can be seen at our gallery in Foligno, Piazza Ettore Giacomini, 42.
