LA GALLERYA PRESENTS
SELF-PORTRAIT ON MARBLE BY THE MASTER ACHILLE PERETTI
H60CM X 47CM
ACHILLE PERETTI, anarchist painter and sculptor belonging to the Milanese Scapigliatura movement.
In the 1870s, he attended the Brera Academy in Milan under the guidance of Giuseppe Bertini (painting), Raffaele Casnedi (figure drawing), Luigi Riccardi (landscape), Luigi Bisi (perspective), and Antonio Caimi (art history). He won numerous awards and recognitions, culminating in first place in the final examination of the "Scuola di Pittura riunite" (United School of Painting) in 1878. A classmate and fellow citizen of Cesare Tallone, he frequented the Milanese Scapigliatura scene. A member of the Alessandria section of the First International, he was described by the police as a "fanatical internationalist," an idler who "would like to see every order of things overturned just to fish in troubled waters." [1] He emigrated to the United States in the early 1880s following the repression of the internationalist movement by the Italian government. After traveling to several cities on the southern coast of Louisiana and Chicago, he settled permanently in New Orleans. He obtained U.S. citizenship in 1890 and lived at 632 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans from 1903 until his death. The American playwright Tennessee Williams would later reside in the same house.
