Large 17th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a splendid architectural capriccio with figures, of remarkable pictorial quality. The painting features a grandiose Baroque architecture, built on a system of successive arches, fluted columns, and monumental staircases, perfectly in keeping with the Italian tradition of the second half of the 17th century.
The composition is enlivened by numerous figures rendered with essential features: nobles strolling or in sedan chairs, beggars, pet dogs, and exotic birds. The scene unfolds like a true theatrical stage, creating an idyllic atmosphere, and the architecture lends a dramatic depth of remarkable visual impact.
The painting has been attributed to Viviano Codazzi (1604-1670) with the collaboration of Micco Spadaro, born Domenico Gargiulo (1609-1675). Considered masters of the genre, they collaborated in Naples. Codazzi handled the architectural perspectives while Gargiulo executed the figures.
