Antique tribal rug attributable to the Kurdish area of ??northwestern Iran, datable between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rug has a deep red field decorated with three large rhomboidal medallions aligned vertically, connected by a central axis, according to an archaic scheme with a strong graphic and symbolic impact, typical of Kurdish tribal productions. The medallions, with broken and angular profiles, are enriched with internal geometric motifs and surrounded by a dense secondary decoration, which animates the entire surface without leaving empty areas. The border, articulated in several bands, is characterized by geometric hook motifs, serrations and angular elements, executed with great expressive energy and a natural irregularity, a distinctive feature of tribal weaving. The color palette, dominated by deep reds, dark blues, ivory and rust-orange tones, shows beautiful variations in tone due to the use of natural dyes. Hand-knotted on a wool warp and weft, the rug has a robust structure and a compact weave, suitable for daily use but today particularly appreciated for its decorative and collector's value. The state of conservation is good: the wear is homogeneous and consistent with age, the borders are legible, the fringes are shortened but healthy; no invasive restorations are detected.
