Important English terrestrial globe known as Malby's Terrestrial Globe, published in London on June 1, 1845.
The globe is made of printed and mounted papier-mâché, with detailed cartography and period coloring, and is supported by a metal meridian and a turned wooden base, typical elements of British production in the first half of the 19th century.
The original, clearly legible cartouche states that the globe was:
- produced by Malby & Co., based at Houghton Street, Newcastle Street, Strand, London;
- compiled under the supervision of the "Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge," a prestigious institution founded in 1826 with educational and scientific aims;
- based on the most authentic sources and the latest geographical discoveries available at the time.
A scientific point of particular interest is the presence of magnetic variation lines, adopted according to Professor Peter Barlow's chart, published in the Transactions of the Royal Society in 1833, as explicitly indicated on the cartouche.
The cartography faithfully reflects the state of geographical knowledge in the mid-19th century, making the globe a historical document of great value, as well as a fascinating decorative object.
The globe is in good general condition, with patina, wear, and signs of age consistent with its age, which confirm its authenticity and historical character.
Object with imperfections, it requires restoration.
Object of considerable historical, scientific, and collector's interest, ideal for studies, libraries, period settings, or collections of 19th-century geographical and scientific instruments.
