This unpublished Venetian view, painted in oil on canvas in the mid-18th century, exhibits all the peculiarities of Gabriele Bella's simple and naive art. A self-taught Venetian artist, he has recently been rediscovered and re-evaluated for the documentary value of his views, which portray scenes of life and historical events during the golden years of the Serenissima.
His name remained unknown compared to many of his contemporaries with greater technical skill, only achieving considerable success and proper recognition in recent years. His paintings, always rich in boats and figures, are highly sought after by collectors.
The canvas presented here is typical of his repertoire and depicts a view of the Rio della Sensa with gondolas parading in front of the palace entrances.
The painting is in very good condition, having been relined, and comes with an important antique gilded frame that significantly enhances its impact on the wall.
