George III sterling silver basket, Paul Storr, London, 1818
Rectangular shape with shell border and gadroon pattern, movable grooved handle with garland cartouche.
Motto: Honi soit qui mal y pense. Shame on him who thinks evil of it. Motto of the English Order of the Garter, established, according to a legendary tradition, by King Edward III of England in honor of his mistress, the Countess of Salisbury, who dropped a garter during a ball; the king rushed to pick it up and rebuked the courtiers who were smiling at the episode with these words.
