Hero's Engine, Aeolipile, scientific instrument, 19th century  Translated
Description:
Hero's Engine or Aeolipile, scientific instrument from the 1800s. The Hero's engine is considered the first steam engine and the first jet engine in history, invented by Hero of Alexandria in the first century AD. The device exploits the transformation of thermal energy into rotating mechanical energy. The instrument consists of a boiler resting on three brass legs which is heated by an underlying flame until steam is produced. At the top there is a copper sphere where two curved tubes protrude in opposite directions. The steam exits at high speed from the nozzles, generating a thrust that makes the sphere rotate rapidly. This model served as an educational tool to explain the transformation of energy from thermal steam into mechanical energy. Rare collector's item in excellent condition.
