This is a high-quality wooden sculpture depicting a female Moor, an emblem of the Venetian sculptural tradition, depicted standing while holding a flowered cornucopia with her hands. The figure is placed on a column-shaped base draped in wood, supported by four clawed feet.
The work is made entirely of carved wood in black lacquer, with gilded and silvered details, and finished in polychrome.
The history of the Moors has its roots in the Middle Ages and then extended in the eighteenth century, during the maximum splendor of the power of the rich maritime republic, to all other areas of art, especially in sculpture, giving life to true masterpieces of tradition.
Emblem of the power of the Serenissima (Most Serene Republic of Venice) and status of well-being, wealth, and power to celebrate the supremacy of the Republic on the seas of the Mediterranean, the figure of the Moor therefore becomes the main decoration for the ballrooms of the sumptuous halls of the Serenissima, from nude slaves sculpted to beautiful servants dressed in golden and polychrome clothes.
As our work testifies, the creation of such sculptural works does not stop in the eighteenth century but continues even in the following century, transforming its essence from "status symbol" of the rich Venetian aristocracy to furnishing many European residences, becoming a kind of souvenir for wealthy foreigners who, after visiting Venice, wanted to own a valuable object.
Good condition, with some signs of aging and old restoration, which do not affect its beauty and solidity.
