Description Sterling silver ewer with lid, vermeil interior, Queen Victoria, Samuel Smily Goldsmiths Alliance, London, 1868. This splendid lidded ewer is an unusual shape, made of heavy gauge silver, featuring smooth surfaces highlighted by bold decorative floral and geometric motifs and cartouches on either side of the ewer's body. A hinged lid with a domed surface and decorations that echo the theme of the ewer's body. The handle features cast, chiseled and applied ornaments. Short spout, circular base. Vermeil silver interior. Sterling silver hallmarked with 5 hallmarks: Maker's mark: Samuel Smily Goldsmiths Alliance Lion passant: alloy mark. 925/1000 sterling silver guarantee Leopard's head with crown: city of London Date letter year: 1868 Duty mark: Queen Victoria head Dimensions 33.5cm x 26cm x 20.5cm Weight 2,142gr Provenance Private collection Conditions Slight signs of wear consistent with age and surface scratches.
