Louis XV, King of France, with Queen Consort Maria Leszczynska, Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 - Paris 1744) Workshop of  Translated
Description:
Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 - Paris 1744) Workshop of Pair of portraits of Louis XV, King of France, and Queen Consort Maria Leszczynska oil on canvas (2), 41 x 32 cm, framed 53 x 44 cm. The complete details of this work can be found directly from the following - LINK - It is easy to identify the effigies in this fascinating pair of portraits as the rulers of France, namely Louis XV of Bourbon, who ascended the throne in 1715 as a young thirteen-year-old and nicknamed the "Well-Beloved", and Maria Leszczynska, Queen Consort of France and Navarre and daughter of King of Poland Stanislaw I. The queen is depicted in three-quarter view, with a smiling face turned towards the viewer. She wears a gray-tinged wig with her hair gathered around the nape of her neck and a diadem on her head, and pendants in her ears. She wears a red velvet, gold-brocaded dress with a wide neckline, rich lace sleeves, and a bodice adorned with a bib with diamond and pearl jewelry. On her shoulders rests a blue velvet cloak embroidered with the heraldic lilies of the Crown of France and lined with ermine. The ruler, also immortalized in three-quarter view, wears a breastplate over a coat, with a blue band on his shoulder and a white collar around his neck. His face shows that same reassuring expression that illuminates his consort's face. It is presumed that these portraits are derived from a pair of official paintings of the sovereigns most likely executed by Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684-1745), prototypes that are traditionally dated to the year of the wedding, 1725, and of which several smaller replicas are known. Similar features of the rulers can be seen in paintings by contemporaries, such as in the canvases by Charles Van Loo (collections of the Palace of Versailles, Salon de Mars), Jean Marc Nattier (Muzeum Narodowe, Warsaw), Alexis-Simon Belle (Trianon). We can name another painter who devoted himself to these subjects, namely Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 - Paris 1744), whose portraiture shows strong stylistic affinities with our two effigies. A portrait painter among the most significant and in-demand of his time and a great interpreter of the French school, working in France at the courts of Louis XIV and then Louis XV, during his career he obtained a large number of commissions, with a workload that implied the existence of a complex workshop: it is therefore likely to assume that these were made by one of his direct and loyal collaborators. The pair of works is presented in good condition, with beautiful carved and gilded wooden frames, also in excellent condition. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The painting is sold complete with a pleasant antique gilded frame and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet.
