Description
Alighieri Dante (1265 - 1321). The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri with commentary by N. Tommaseo. Venice: Co'tipi del Gondoliere, 1837.
Three volumes bound in one. Graceful Venetian vignette on each frontispiece. Solid 19th-century half-leather binding with corners, spine and raised bands with rich friezes and titles in gold. Gilt top edge and marbled endpapers. Engraved noble ex libris. Only some slight and inconsequential marginal foxing, otherwise an excellent, particularly wide-margined example (untrimmed and with deckle edges). This is the original edition of the Divine Comedy with the magnificent commentary by Tommaseo, one of the monuments of 19th-century Dante exegesis, written during Tommaseo's years in France. Cf. Mambelli 198; De Batines I, 182. Rare, especially in such condition and in a beautiful binding like the present example.
