Oil painting on canvas measuring 102 x 142 cm (canvas only) and 115 x 158 cm with frame, depicting a landscape with fishermen by the painter Henri Place (Paris 1812 – 1860), signed and dated Place 1852.
The composition is very versatile and intelligently balanced in its colors, especially in the continuous contrasts between the very light and slightly darker areas. This reveals the artist's extraordinary versatility, stemming both from a classical education derived from studying great masters through copying plaster casts and prints, and from a passionate love for music, which made everything faster, more colorful, and more ethereal. This is evident in the strong chromatic impact on the canvas, with a clear preference for drawing where both the richness of detail and a very methodical and rational arrangement of each individual figure or object emerge. This canvas shows how the painter adopted the luminism typical of the great Venetian artists, which he studied and reinterpreted in his own personal way.
This is a painting from the artist's full maturity, in which he employed his scenic abilities to create a skillful orchestration where the clear and harmonized color range is enhanced by light.
