Series of original 18th-century strappi depicting the signs of the zodiac
Technique: Oil on canvas (strappi)
Period: 18th century
Overall dimensions: H 85 × W 120 cm
A rare and fascinating series of original 18th-century strappi depicting the Zodiac Signs, executed in oil on canvas and subsequently transferred to a new support using the ancient technique of conservative strappo. The works feature a cultured and decorative iconography, reminiscent of the allegorical and astrological tradition widespread in 18th-century paintings and ornamental cycles.
Each scene depicts a zodiac sign through its traditional symbol—such as Aries, Cancer, Leo, Libra—set in idealized landscapes or seascapes, with shaded skies and distant horizons. The animal figures are rendered with simple but effective strokes, while the focus is on the symbolic and narrative value of the image.
A particularly valuable element is the rich painted border that frames each subject: a polychrome geometric decoration enriched with star motifs, planetary symbols, and rosettes, which directly recalls the 18th-century aesthetics of decorative frescoes and cosmological murals.
The patina of time, slight abrasions, and natural irregularities of the surface contribute to the authentic charm of these strappi, confirming their antiquity and originality.
