Oil on canvas. The artwork is one of several replicas, with some variations, of the famous subject created by the Bolognese painter Guido Reni (1574 -1642) and his workshop. The composition, which features the Virgin in prayer bent to adore the sleeping Child, is considered an invention of Reni's genial vein, which, following its great success among collectors of the time, was then taken up by other 17th-century artists, among whom the name of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as "Il Sassoferrato", stands out. The two most famous variations of this fascinating scene see the Virgin with her hands joined in prayer, as in this case, adopted by Salvi, or with her hands on her chest, typically Renian. Other variations concern the position of the head of the sleeping Child Jesus, facing upwards as in this version, rather than reclined to the side; finally, the background fabrics change. However, the intensity of the scene also stands out in this replica: the body of the child, abandoned in sleep, occupies it transversely, where the divine nature underlies in sleep the human one; above it, inclined in a protective and contemplative gesture, the body of Mary, who expresses all the maternal tenderness but also, in the gesture of her hands, the adoration of the incarnate mystery represented by her little son. The vivid colors of the fabrics - the cushion on which Jesus is lying, the curtain behind, the clothes of the Mother - highlight the brightness of the complexions. The painting, relined in the mid-20th century.
