Polychrome papier-mâché sculpture depicting the Immaculate Mary. Central Italy, 18th century.  Translated
Description:
Interesting sculpture of the Virgin represented as the Immaculate Conception, an epithet that preserves her from original sin, and therefore, depicted as usual on a crescent moon immersed in clouds and with the serpent next to her. At first glance it may seem like a wooden sculpture, but as can be seen from the small hole on the back, it is possible to notice how this is hollow inside and therefore more likely to have been made of papier-mâché, by a plasticizer of considerable quality during the 18th century, probably in an area pertaining to the Papal State. This small work of devotional art is of exquisite taste as they are intrinsically linked to our devotional history and were placed in niches along the stairways of the historic buildings of our cities. The sculpture is in good condition, although it has lost the surface layer of color in some small parts. the tiny hole created in the back helps us understand that this is actually a papier-mâché sculpture in the round. The height of the sculpture is 52cm. We attach a certificate of authenticity to the sale.  Translated
