Lombard Baroque '700 Burr Walnut Bureau  Translated
Description:
With immense joy, I present this majestic Lombard Louis XV 'urka' bureau in walnut and burr walnut, measuring 130 x 132 x 65 cm, from the first half of the 18th century, with a truly rare bombé shape. In the first half of the 18th century, Lombard cabinetmaking at its finest engaged in the construction of this marvelous piece of furniture, known as an 'urka' or sarcophagus due to its characteristic upper body which, noticeably tapering upwards, takes on the shape of an urn. The curve of the saber legs, ending in a volute, anticipates the triple movement of this burr walnut furniture and creates a fluid continuity in the undulation of the shaped apron, which is also repeated on the sides. On the front, there are 3 drawers constructed with the same high quality of materials. The drop-down writing surface, with its fine and elegant bombé shape, narrows upwards, resting on a rectangular base. Furthermore, it is surmounted by the so-called 'priest's hat,' which often conceals a secret compartment. In this piece of furniture, the Lombard character, already evident in its bombé structure, is further emphasized by the burr veneer decoration, resembling turnip skin, enclosed within a large rocaille cartouche with broad curves that extend from the front towards the rest of the furniture. The same decoration is found in the drawer beneath the writing surface, flanking the keyhole and the handles (both original). The structure of the furniture is highlighted by prominent corner pilasters, both above and below, which accentuate the curves of the edges. The furniture is in perfect condition and comes from a private home. The paintings and art objects published here are my exclusive property and are therefore always available for in-person viewing by appointment at my exhibition spaces located in Sanremo and Brescia.
