"Madonna of the Milk" "Virgo Lactans"  Translated
Description:
Madonna of the Milk “Virgo Lactans” Oil on wood panel 17th-century artist Coeval box frame Panel cm. 46 x 59 Frame cm. 67 x 77 Excellent condition The Madonna of the Milk is one of the most moving and revered sacred images in the Christian tradition and depicts the Virgin Mary breastfeeding Baby Jesus. This particular image is also known by the Latin term “Virgo Lactans” and the Greek “Maria Galaktotrophousa”. The iconography of oriental origins transcends artistic boundaries to become a universal symbol of Motherhood, Love, Hope, and divine Protection. During the Counter-Reformation period in 1543, the Council of Trent intervened heavily on this Marian depiction. The decree "De invocatione, veneratione, et reliquiis sanctorum et sacris imaginibus" placed limits on depictions deemed sensual. The great censor Carlo Borromeo personally worked to cover the Virgin's breasts, modifying images deemed inappropriate. But popular resistance, despite the prohibitions, continued its veneration. The Madonna of the Milk remained the image of Motherhood par excellence. The panel published here is a beautiful example of this sought-after iconography, painted in oil on wood by an artist of the 17th century. It is in excellent condition, professionally cleaned and panelled, complete with the beautiful coeval box frame, lacquered and with elegant golden decorations. We issue a stamped and signed certificate of authenticity that guarantees the era, origin, and all the characteristics of the work, drawn up by an Antique dealer affiliated with FIMA (ITALIAN FEDERATION OF ART MERCHANTS).
