"Jesus among the Doctors in the Temple"
Neapolitan school of the 17th century
This mid-17th century oil on canvas painting depicts an evangelical moment taken from the Gospel of Luke (2, 41-52), in which the young twelve-year-old Jesus discusses with the doctors in the temple. At the center of the work is Jesus seated who, with an eloquent gesture and luminous halo, emphasizing His divine wisdom, discusses with the elderly doctors who listen and discuss with him by consulting the Sacred texts. On the right, Mary and Joseph witness the scene with an expression of amazement and relief. The architectural background, with columns and circular structure, recalls the interior of the temple of Jerusalem, evoked in a classic key. The painting was probably intended for an ecclesiastical or convent environment with the devotional purpose of highlighting Christ's wisdom from his youth and the centrality of the Word. In terms of style and setting, the work is close to late 17th-century Neapolitan painting, with influences from Luca Giordano and Francesco Solimena.
The painting is an oil on canvas in excellent state of preservation with re-lining from the second half of the 20th century.
