“Silent Nature”
Gasparo Lopez (circle of)
(Naples, 1677 – Florence, 1732)
Also known as Gasparo dei Fiori
Gasparo Lopez was one of the leading Italian specialists in floral still life painting during the late Baroque period, active in Naples, Rome, and Florence. His works are characterized by rich floral compositions in elegant and scenographic vases, the use of landscape backdrops with architectural elements in a contrast of light and shadow that highlights volumes, and an attentive naturalistic rendering of petals, leaves, and fruits. The work in question exhibits many of these traits, suggesting it belongs to Lopez's circle or was painted by an artist within his style. The painting, decorative in nature, was undoubtedly intended to adorn aristocratic or bourgeois interiors. The variety of flowers and fruits represents the beauty of nature, with possible symbolic meanings (vanitas, fertility, abundance).
The work is an oil on canvas and was likely relined around the mid-20th century.
