Consalvo Carelli (Naples, 1818-1900), a prominent member of the School of Posillipo, is known for his ability to capture landscapes and natural scenes. This oil on canvas painting demonstrates Carelli's ability to transform even simple and rural subjects into poetic and realistic images, celebrating both the natural environment and its creatures.
The painting depicts a brown-fleeced GOAT, immortalized in a lush and luminous rural Campanian landscape. The animal, depicted in profile while grazing, emerges against a backdrop of rolling hills and a bright sky, elements typical of the environmental and luministic sensibility developed by Carelli during his activity between Naples, Rome and Paris. The careful rendering of naturalistic details and chiaroscuro highlights the technical mastery acquired by the artist under the guidance of his father Raffaele and later William Leitch. The artist's signature is visible at the bottom.
The preparatory drawing of our painting entitled "Study of a Goat" is kept at the Certosa di San Martino in Naples and registered with inventory number 11364(245 - datable between 1845 and 1870.
