Antique Italian painting from the second half of the 16th century. Oil on panel artwork depicting an important Gospel episode, the circumcision of Jesus, a rare find of remarkable pictorial quality. The scene takes place within a solemn architectural setting, a niche with columns and drapes framing the composition.
Two arches in the background reveal sweeping mountain views, lending depth thanks to the aerial perspective technique. The Child is placed in the center, supported by Saint Joseph and handed over to the Priest, who wears a sumptuous vestment with precious gold embroidery. The use of vibrant colors, the flowing draperies, and the expressive faces hark back to the Mannerist pictorial language of Northern Italy.
