Firstborn of four brothers, Tommaso was born in Anagni in 1906 to Carlo Gismondi and Angela Ferretti, but moved as a boy with his family to Rome. After the war he went to Buenos Aires in Argentina, and then returned to his native Anagni in the late fifties.
He became known as "the Pope's sculptor" for the works commissioned by Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II: some of his most famous works are the doors of the Vatican Library and the Vatican Secret Archive (1985), some bronzes of St. Peter's Basilica, the chair of John Paul II and the Via Crucis.
He was also an appreciated sketch artist of coins of the Vatican and Italy.
